Hikers to learn about South River aquifer

The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership (LBWP) will sponsor a hike in the South River aquifer beginning at 1 p.m. Feb. 21. In case of rain, the event will be postponed to 10 a.m. Feb. 22.

Hikers will meet in the gravel parking lot at Fairway Golf, Marlboro Road, south of the Ferry Street light at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division, off Route 18 south.

Participants, who will learn about aquifers, recharge zones, and how land use, planning and zoning affect the drinking water, will hike in the recharge zone of the Farrington Sands Aquifer, South River/Lower Raritan Basin Watershed area.

Brian Racin, chairman of the LBWP Nature Walk Committee, will lead the hike along game trails and old farm roads in an undeveloped part of Middlesex County. Walkers are advised to wear waterproof hiking shoes, woolen socks, a hat and long-sleeve clothing.
