On Sunday, Jan .18 the Manville Recreation kids traveled to Middlesex and Monroe for some tournament wrestling.
Jason Thompson took home a silver medal. He put on a takedown clinic in his first match to win this one 9-7. Joe Kronmaier took home a fourth-place medal.
Sean O’Brien took home another silver medal for Manville. In his first match, O’Brien was put into a headlock but rolled through and pinned his man in 10 seconds. To get into the finals, O’Brien dominated in a 7-1 win.
Kevin Conover got into the medal round with a first period pin of his man. He then received a fourth-place medal for his efforts on the day.
Dylan Whitenight got into the finals with a pin of his own. In the first one, he fought off his back to take this match into the third while still losing by points. Starting in the up position Whitenight put in the half and turned his man over for the pin and get into the finals. He took a silver medal here.
Joe Lamonica earned a bronze medal. With a takedown and back points, he got into the medal round with a 6-2 win in his match.
Conor Riggs took a silver medal home also. With time running out, Riggs took his man down and pin with seconds left in the third period. In his second match, he dominated from start to finish to get himself to the finals. In the finals, Riggs wrestled well again coming up just short for his silver medal.
Shane Freuler took home the bronze at his weight. With a pin in his first match after leading 5-0, Freuler went into his third-place match and put on a takedown clinic before putting his man on his back for the pin and a bronze medal.
Troy Oset had a great day of wrestling. After destroying his first opponent in 10 seconds he wrestled a tough second match that was very close to the very end. Oset then ended up pinning his final opponent to take the bronze medal.
Michael Tyle, who was not supposed to wrestle, got a call late Saturday to let him know that. But Coach Paul Whitenight and Tyle’s family decided Michael could wrestle against the next older division kids.
Tyle pinned his man in the first period to move on and now knew he could wrestle with the older kids. His coaches (Ray Thompson, Paul Whitenight, Lou Riggs and Al Klein) were much more impressed than Michael was about the kids he was wrestling. Michael now wrestled into the finals, where he took home a silver medal from the older kids.
”These kids wrestled great today and we could not be prouder,” Coach Klein said.
In Monroe, the five kids who competed wrestled well and Manville came away with two medals.
Matt Rogalski was able to take a third place medal. TJ Caswell had a tough match to start and won 4-0 in a hard-fought match. His next match was easier in that he pinned his man in the second period. In his semifinals, he was in a tough match before pinning his opponent. Caswell ended up taking home the silver here.
The week before these kids wrestled at Roselle Park and also and were able to take home three medals.
Brian Kuhlman took home the bronze with a couple of wins. He pinned in his first match to get a match in the semis. Kuhlman then pinned his final man to take home his medal.
Caswell took home a silver medal here as he pinned his first two opponents to get to the finals and settled for the silver.
Jake Tokarzewski took the other silver medal by pinning his opponent. Tokarzewski went out to a 4-2 lead going into the second where he then pinned his man.
