Capital Health Expands Services for Epilepsy Patients

Clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormalities.

By Jason Stacchini
HAMILTON — Clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormalities. Known commonly as epilepsy, there are many possible causes, and diagnosing the right treatment requires only the most experienced specialists and advanced monitoring equipment.
Capital Health announced today that Dr. Rajesh Sachdeo, an established epilepsy specialist in Mercer and Somerset counties, has joined the Institute for Neurosciences, located at Capital Health in Hamilton. In addition, Capital Health also announced the availability of long-term video EEG monitoring for epilepsy patients at Capital Health’s Fuld and Mercer hospitals in Trenton.
The two additions provide Capital Health’s Institute for Neurosciences with the resources to provide comprehensive diagnostic and treatment options for those living with seizures and epilepsy throughout Mercer and Lower Bucks counties.
Dr. Sachdeo is a board certified, fellowship trained neurologist with almost 30 years experience helping epilepsy patients throughout the Princeton and Somerset areas. He received his medical degree from and completed his internship at Christian Medical College at Punjab University in Punjab, India. He completed his Neurology residency at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, Ill. and completed his fellowship in Neurophysiology and Epilepsy at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Ill.
His specific area of medical interest includes pediatric epilepsy. He can be reached for appointments at Capital Health’s Institute for Neurosciences in Hamilton by calling 609-528-8888.
The Epilepsy Center at Capital Health’s Institute for Neurosciences helps patients who suffer from the symptoms of epilepsy. Long-term video-EEG monitoring, also known as video telemetry, is a diagnostic technique used in certain patients with epilepsy or seizures. For the testing, a patient is typically hospitalized for one to five days, during which they are continuously monitored and recorded with a video camera and an electroencephalograph (or EEG).
Used by a specialty trained physician like Dr. Sachdeo, long-term video-EEG monitoring helps physicians:
determine where a seizure begins in the brain,
distinguish whether or not the seizures are caused by epilepsy, and
evaluate a person who is a candidate for surgery to treat epilepsy.
In addition to both Neurophysiology Laboratories at the Fuld and Mercer hospitals, Capital Health has now equipped rooms in the intensive care unit at Fuld, two adult beds in the surgical trauma unit at Fuld and two pediatric beds at Mercer for long-term video EEG monitoring.
With investments in advanced technologies, and significant expansions, Capital Health System is a growing organization comprised of the Mercer and Fuld hospitals in Trenton, N.J. and the Capital Health System in Hamilton ambulatory facility. CHS is also planning to open a new state-of-the-art hospital in Hopewell Township, N.J. in 2011. Our clinical strengths are enhanced through the largest medical staff in Mercer County and our membership in the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Network. CHS is a Magnet-recognized health system, and continues to thrive as Mercer County’s only regional trauma center, neonatal intensive care unit, the region’s mobile intensive care unit provider and the county’s psychiatric emergency screening center. Our state-of-the-art technology is headlined by the area’s only CyberKnife® Robotic Surgery System and the first da Vinci® Surgical System in Mercer County for non-invasive and minimally invasive cancer treatments. Capital Health is also home to the Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center of New Jersey.
