More advanced technology

Newark, NJ — The Sleep Disorders Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC) has reopened with more advanced technology and enhanced patient bed laboratory rooms for the greater care and comfort of patients. Both adult and pediatric patients are treated at the Center.
The Sleep Disorders Center
All new testing equipment and a brand new, more spacious testing area for sleep studies are found at the Newark Beth Israel Sleep Disorders Center. The Center, which was the first accredited sleep disorders center in New Jersey, is also under new leadership, bringing enhanced services and great access to sleep studies for referring physicians.
“The Sleep Disorders Center is the oldest sleep lab in the state and provides a modernized, relaxing experience for patients,” says Center Medical Director Jeffrey S. Nahmias, MD; ACP; FCCP; D, ABSM. “Patients should also know that the physicians are board-certified in Sleep Medicine.”
Each four-bed laboratory room for sleep studies has a private bathroom and modernized features for greater comfort. Parents with children receiving a study stay over as well. If the patient is currently under the care of another board-certified sleep medicine specialist, that physician can also read the sleep study and participate in the care.
“Sleep study patients have access to every medical specialty available at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center,” says Dr. Nahmias. “Sometimes a diagnosis requires additional neurological or other testing, and patients have the full complement of specialties in one location.”
Patients who may benefit from a sleep study are those who experience any of the following:
· Loud, disruptive snoring
· Sleep apnea—Repeatedly stops breathing during sleep
· Insomnia—Can’t fall asleep or stay asleep
· Narcolepsy—Sudden, excessive episodes of daytime sleepiness
· Unexplained problems with depression or lack of energy
· Attention deficit disorder in children or hyperactivity
Treatments include weight loss, behavioral therapy, medication, surgery, uses of CPAP devices and other oral devices during sleep.
