MOUNT HOLLY, NEW JERSEY February 18, 2009 – The High Street Grill, a locally owned restaurant and piano bar located in old town Mount Holly, has kicked off their 4th Annual “Long Beard Contest.” The event, which began on Tuesday, February 3rd, was widely received among a crowd of eager participants ready to grow whiskers for a cause. The beneficiary of the fundraiser this year will be Hope For The Warriors™, a national non-profit group assisting combat wounded service members and their families.
The participant who has the longest beard and raises the most money over the next six weeks will be declared the winner and receive a much needed shave on Thursday, March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day. Additionally, the tips from guest bartenders every Wednesday night from 7 to 9 pm will be donated to Hope For The Warriors™. Some of the folks giving of their own time include local military personnel John McKee and Dave Dean along with local government officials and attorneys. Placards will also be available for sale so you can write a message to honor those who have sacrificed in the line of duty. Gold Star Wife Christy Burkart, who knows firsthand about that sacrifice, spoke to the crowd at the kickoff and thanked them for their support. Christy was also a recipient of a Hope For The Warriors ™ Spouse Scholarship last year.
Restaurant owner Nancy McDevitt states that previous Long Beard Contests have raised $4,000, and this year they are hoping to top that number.
