Princeton Township has concluded its deer management program for the season, culling a total of 170 deer.
Township Mayor Bernie Miller said 154 deer were killed by White Buffalo Inc., the Conn.-based wildlife management firm the township has contracted with to cull its deer population since the township instituted the deer management program in 2000.
The United Bowhunters of New Jersey, which also participates in the township deer culling, took 16 deer this season, for a total of 170 taken, Mr. Miller said. He made his remarks at Monday evening’s Princeton Township Committee meeting.
”I’d like to commend United Bowhunters for their good work,” Mr. Miller said, noting they took more deer than usual.
In past years Mr. Miller has been critical of the bowhunters’ participation — which is a stipulation of the board that approves the township’s program in the state Division of Fish & Wildlife — for taking a small number of deer and posing a safety risk to township park users.
