A Mercer County grand jury has indicted a 44-year-old resident for allegedly driving into a grandfather pushing his 9-month-old granddaughter in a stroller on the sidewalk along Denow Road in October 2008.
Lloyd Brower III, 44, of Denow Road, was indicted on two counts each of second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree assault by auto, and one count of third-degree leaving the scene of an accident with injury.
Each second-degree offense carries a penalty of five to 10 years in prison. Each third-degree offense carries a penalty of three to five years in prison.
According to police, Mr. Brower was driving east at 5:10 p.m. Oct. 9, 2008, on Denow Road in his 2003 Ford Escape while under the influence of alcohol, when his car jumped the curb onto the sidewalk, striking 70-year-old Yuanheng Zhong of Hopewell and his 9-month-old granddaughter, Aileen.
Mr. Zhong, underwent surgery for a leg injury at Capitol Health System, Fuld Campus, and also received rib and head injuries as a result of the accident, police said in October.
The baby was not seriously injured, police said.
After his vehicle ran into some trees, Mr. Brower ran away, police said. Hopewell Township police located him a few blocks away.
Mr. Brower is free on $50,000 bail.
