Student food drive a community effort

Tim Matheney, Principal of SBHS
The South Brunswick community provided tremendous support to the recent Food Drive sponsored by South Brunswick High School. We were proud to donate 10,500 pounds of food to the Middlesex County Food Pantry.
Four supermarkets in the area welcomed South Brunswick students to collect donations on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21 and 22. We appreciate the support from the Stop n Shop stores on Route 27, Route 1, and Summerfield Boulevard (Route 522), and the Shop Rite store on Route 130.
We had many students — well over 300 throughout the weekend — who volunteered their time. Some students spent their entire day on both Saturday and Sunday collecting food donations. More than 30 staff members from SBHS volunteered to supervise the effort. After a full week of school, they dedicated their weekends to helping students in this community food-raiser. Faculty member Maury Wohl and senior Liz Butera, in particular, provided outstanding leadership to this important effort.
Local businesses were extremely generous as well. Pavese-McCormick Insurance Agency contributed a generous donation for the purchase of food. Dayton Dry Cleaners also supported our efforts. The following donors provided food for the volunteers throughout the weekend: Joe’s Italian Deli; Four Musketeers Pizza; Vinny’s Pizzeria; Subway on Route 27; Hot Bread on Route 27; and Dunkin Donuts on Route 27 and Route 522.
The South Brunswick community can take great pride in the generosity of hundreds of shoppers who donated graciously to support families who are in need. When the students from SBHS asked for their support, the community answered with a resounding, “Yes!”
