WEST WINDSOR — Work is set to begin this month on the Route 1 Millstone River Bridge replacement project, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The $20 million project will involve the replacement of the Millstone River Bridge on Route 1, originally built in 1928, and related roadway improvements from Harrison Street in West Windsor Township to Princeton-Plainsboro Road in Plainsboro Township.
Despite a rehabilitation in 1959, the bridge was deemed structurally deficient and needed to be replaced.
Construction is set to begin March 16. The contractor expects to work day and evening shifts as required to finish the project, according to a DOT press release.
Lane restrictions on Route 1 will be performed between the hours of 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
The new bridge represents a major upgrade to the current structure. It will adhere to modern design standards for bridges. It spans over the river that divides Middlesex and Mercer counties and also serves as the West Windsor-Plainsboro border.
It will be wider by 50 feet, allowing for the installation of shoulders and sidewalks. At the time of the design, officials said construction was expected to slightly less than two years.
