$33.6 million plan on the table

ROBBINSVILLE The school board plans to vote Monday on a preliminary 2009-2010 budget after getting financial aid numbers from the state.
District officials on March 3 presented a $33.6 million spending plan based on the state’s maximum annual spending
increase of 4 percent. It includes 16 new full-time staff members, while cutting about two positions.
Superintendent John Szabo called the preliminary numbers for the 2009-2010 school year a “maintenance budget,” noting the actual numbers will depend largely upon the state funding expected to be to be announced this week by Gov. Jon Corzine.
Dr. Szabo said he based his projected tax levy figure of $29.66 million on the state’s 4 percent cap increase over last year’s figure of $28,520,968.
He declined to say how the new figure would impact the local tax rate until the district gets its aid numbers from the state, which was expected today (Thursday).
Despite the economic climate, Robbinsville hopes this year to get as much as the $2.88 million in state aid it received last year. Dr. Szabo has noted this is the second lowest amount of aid received among Mercer County school districts, after the county’s vocational school.
