BORDENTOWN CITY — Registration is under way for the seventh annual Bordentown St. Patrick’s Day races, which are slated to raise money for the school district.
The three events, sponsored by the Bordentown Education Foundation, are expected to draw over 500 people to the March 21 events and generate about $8,000 for the group, according to race director and committee member Anthony DiLemme.
The money will go toward special teacher projects in the district, and to scholarships for students at Bordentown Regional High School, he said. Past projects have included audio-visual and physical education equipment and textbooks.
He said the group expects about 250 runners in the 5K, 125 participants in the two-mile fun walk, and 150 kids in the one-mile kids’ race.
The latter event is relatively new, having been added in 2006 to give kids under 12 the chance to compete. Since then, Mr. DiLemme said, the event has been a consistent draw for children in the district.
All three races will start at the Clara Barton School, on Crosswicks Street, with the walk at 8:45 a.m., the kids’ run at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K at 10 a.m.
The walk and kids’ run will end at the school, while the 5K will finish up on Farnsworth Avenue. That road, along with Crosswicks and Prince streets and those in-between, will be closed in the morning for the day’s competitions.
Registration by Friday, March 20, is $17 for the 5K or the walk and $10 for the kids’ race and includes a long-sleeved shirt. Late mail and in-person registration, which will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 20 and on race day at 7:30 a.m. at the Clara Barton School, is $20, and shirts will be distributed as available.
The race is certified by United States Amateur Track & Field, meaning that USATF members earn 500 points toward their national rankings. They also receive a $2 discount on registration.
”Every year we’ve had a good turnout,” Mr. DiLemme said. “It’s very popular. A lot of people from out-of-town come to participate in the run. A lot of local people are in the walk, and the kids are all from the schools, so everyone is usually very happy with the event.”
