BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP: Police receive federal stimulus funds

BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP — Township police are taking home a piece of the federal stimulus pie with a grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
The $11,728 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant comes as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which President Barack Obama signed into law Feb. 17. The JAG program makes up $2 billion of the $787 billion to be invested into the country’s infrastructure.
The Office of Justice Programs administers the JAG program, which allows states and municipalities to further activities to prevent and control crime and to improve the criminal justice system, according to the OJP’s Web site.
The grants are allocated based on a formula that takes into account population and violent crime statistics. Sixty percent of the funding goes to the state while 40 percent is awarded directly to municipalities.
