Anne Lyon of Bordentown City
To the editor:
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” For at least 30 years, that idiom has been used as an excuse for avoiding change. Here in Bordentown, some people continue to tout it whenever election time comes around. Ironically, it has been those very times when we have risked change that we have realized growth and improvement in the quality of our city life. This year we are offered the unusual opportunity of a very full slate of commissioner candidates. We should take advantage of this chance. We should educate ourselves about all of the candidates and open our minds to possibilities. To this end, it would be a terrific idea if we could have a candidates forum to allow all of the candidates to introduce themselves and answer questions about their platforms.
One of this year’s candidates is Heather Cheesman. I first met Ms. Cheesman over 15 years ago and renewed my acquaintance with her while working on the garden committee and during the events leading up to our 325th celebration. She is one of the most fair-minded individuals I have ever known. She has shown herself to be creative and energetic by spearheading the Spirit Walks that were so successful in raising needed funds for the celebration. She has shown her strength after facing breast cancer by walking 60 miles in three days to raise money for the Cure. In her work on the school board, she has demonstrated her intelligence and tenacity, as well as her willingness to serve the public good.
We are very fortunate that we will have choices this year when we select our city leaders. I am happy that we have so many candidates running this time, and I cannot think of anyone who is better qualified than Heather Cheesman to receive one of my three votes.
