SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Boy Scouts to have fundraiser

by Davy James, Staff Writer
In these troubled economic times, the richest of corporations down to the noblest of local organizations have felt the impact of the recession. The Boy Scouts of America are no exception and it’s seeking aid from local residents to help fund some of its programs.
The Boys Scouts will be holding a comedy night fundraiser at the Stress Factory in New Brunswick on April 26 to help keep their summer camps running and to fund operational costs.
”This year we’re having a really hard time raising funds,” said Joe Zamorski, scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 90 in South Brunswick. “It’s a tough scenario. Normally, we target children’s programs, so this year we decided to try something different with the comedy night.”
The event will feature comedian Tom McTiernan, who has appeared on Comedy Central, as well as local resident Buddy Thomas, who volunteered to be one of the comedians on the bill. Mr. Zamorski said the comedians will put on a nonoffensive show.
The funding goes toward financial assistance to Scouts who can’t afford the $275 per week summer camps.
”A lot of people are out of work or are in fear of losing their jobs,” Mr. Zamorski said. “A lot more people are putting in for financial assistance this year. I, myself put in for assistance for my boys to attend.”
Mr. Zamorski said the camps are vital to helping the Scouts earn merit badges and to learn important lessons that help them develop into adults.
”This is not a playtime camp because the boys are learning and living in the woods,” he said. “We build leaders and teach the boys how to be members of their communities. The entire program is community minded and teaches the boys about respect and doing what is right. The Boy Scouts are constantly helping out their township food banks, donating to the needy and holding drives to send care packages to our soldiers.”
The event will feature a buffet dinner and an auction for signed sports memorabilia and donated items from local merchants. Tickets cost $35 if purchased before April 10 and $45 after that. The dinner will begin at 5 p.m. and the show will begin at 7 p.m. To order tickets or for more information call 609-419-1600 ext. 11.
