Now that Hopewell Township Committeemen David Sandahl has announced his intention to resign in order to accept an appointment by Gov. Jon S. Corzine to the New Jersey Recovery and Accountability Task Force, the township Democratic organization is seeking candidates to fill the impending vacancy on the committee.
”This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in actively participating in local government and making a meaningful impact on our community and region,” said Carol Kleis, chairwoman of the Hopewell Township Democratic organization.
”Residents are invited to contribute to the future progress and direction of our township by applying for the committee position vacated by Mr. Sandahl. We wish David success in his important new role with the state and are grateful for his inspired leadership as member of the committee and past deputy mayor,” Ms. Kleis said.
”It has really been a great honor to serve Hopewell Township over the past five years,” said Mr. Sandahl. “But given the severity of the economic problems our country and state face, I feel a responsibility to do what I can to ensure that federal stimulus money is spent as effectively as possible in New Jersey and that every dollar of stimulus is made visible to the public.”
Letters of interest and brief resumes from township residents, who must be registered voters, should be submitted to Ms. Kleis at: [email protected] by close of day March 15. From these applicants an appointment will be made by the Township Committee to complete the term running through the end of 2009.
Mr. Sandahl’s letter of resignation was expected to be received by the township clerk’s office today, Thursday.
Township attorney Steve Goodell said that, under state law, the township Democratic organization has 15 days from the date of the resignation to submit, to the Township Committee, a list of up to three candidates to replace Mr. Sandahl. The committee has until 30 days from the date of Mr. Sandahl’s resignation to pick his replacement from that list.
