Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Dates in Somerset County

Somerset County Board of Freeholders
If you are going to be cleaning out your garage, shed or other storage areas this year, you will have six opportunities to dispose of hazardous items on Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off days for Somerset County residents.
The drop-off events offer a convenient way for residents and farmers to dispose of household chemicals and pesticides that cannot be thrown out with regular trash. Consumers also can help prevent mercury from entering the environment by dropping off mercury-containing devices such as batteries, thermometers, fluorescent lights, compact fluorescent lights and old thermostats.
The 2009 program features six drop-off dates and locations.  The first drop-off will be held SaturdayMarch 28, at the Bernards Township Public Works Garage, located at 277 S. Maple Ave. in Basking Ridge.
All drop-off days are held onSaturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  No registration is necessary, but proof of residency is required.  The program is free to county residents.
Additional Household Hazardous Waste drop-off days will be held May 9, June 13, Aug. 1, Sept. 12 and Oct. 24 at different locations.
Tires and used consumer electronics (computers and televisions) will not be accepted as part of the Household Hazardous Waste program, but are collected on the First Saturday of the Month from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Somerset County Recycling Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane in Bridgewater.
Last year, 3,076 county residents brought in approximately 291,983pounds of hazardous materials for proper disposal, including 652 car and wet-cell batteries, 2,365 gallons of used motor oil, 770 gallons of antifreeze, 25,709 pounds of dry-cell batteries and 454 propane tanks.
