WEST WINDSOR: Township gets two brownfield grants

WEST WINDSOR — The township has been awarded two brownfield grants totaling over $60,000 from the state Department of Environmental Protection, according to Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh’s office.
Awarded under the Hazardous Discharge Remediation Fund, the grants will be used to fund preliminary assessments for hazardous materials on two township properties in the redevelopment area. The compost property on Alexander Road, a 7.4-acre site, and the school bus depot property on Wallace Road, .8 acres, were both funded at a cost of $5,537 and $3,704.53, respectively.
The township received additional money to perform a site investigation for the compost property in the amount of $53,945. The preliminary assessment is scheduled to be initiated in April.
Closed since last year, the compost property was used as the township landfill for about 70 years, Mayor Hsueh said in a statement. It needs to be assessed before the design of a remedial strategy, he said.
The bus depot property may have environmental issues, which the preliminary assessment will determine, he said.”I am very grateful to the NJ DEP for assisting the Township with these properties,” he said.
