BORDENTOWN CITY — Today, Thursday, is the final day for candidates to file to run in the in the nonpartisan City Commission May 12 election.
Would-be candidates have until 4 p.m. to drop off their registration information at the office of Clerk Patricia Ryan in City Hall, 324 Farnsworth Ave.
A number of residents already have unofficially announced their candidacies, including incumbents James Lynch and John Wehrman, newcomers Heather Cheesman and Larry Denney and former councilman and mayor Zigmont Targonski.
Mayor John Collom III has confirmed he will not be running for another term.
Under the city’s nonpartisan commission form of government, the three positions are all up for re-election every four years. According to city tradition, commission members choose the mayor from among themselves, and the position normally goes to the candidate who received the most votes.
Only registered voters who have lived in the city for at least a year may file to run. Prospective candidates also are asked if they have been convicted of a crime and, if so, what it was. An answer in the affirmative does not necessarily bar a resident from filing for candidacy or taking office.
According to the city clerk’s office, Mr. Wehrman, Ms. Cheesman and Mr. Denney had submitted completed petition packets as of Tuesday afternoon.
