Filling cultural void

Abraham Leibson. president, Friends of Lambertville Library
One thing the ACME movie petition demonstrated is the excitement Lambertville feels about having movies in our town, and particularly if we move forward to first-run films. Without any real effort we gathered almost 200 signatures and glowing comments. We probably could have gotten several times that if we really had asked.
I disagree that “the Friends’ drive “could possibly backfire,” It would be wonderful if any organization brought first-run films to Lambertville. The Friends feel no special entitlement in this area, but rather is filling what it sees as a cultural void in the community.
The Friends of the Lambertville Library is a group of dedicated volunteers and we understand we must wait for procedural steps to run its course. Our hurry comes from the expectation that first run movies will change the economics of this project and make it viable for the long terms. Key to this is having a stable use agreement with the City.
Just like the County Theater in Doylestown, we need a secure financial foundation by having memberships in enough number that we are not subject to the vagaries of the short term. The Friends therefore will embark on a membership drive and solicit gifts. Let the ACME screening room become a real cultural asset and local institution.
Walk about our town, have dinner, see a movie, catch a Gallery — what could be better?
