NESHANIC STATION, NEW JERSEY’S O’NEILL WINS PRIZE IN 7TH ANNUAL AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS’ GLOBAL ART CONTEST
Neshanic Station, NJ (March 18, 2009) – Illustrating how to be safe at work in a creative way, Sage O’Neill, age 8, of Neshanic Station, NJ recently won second place in the seventh annual American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) kids’ ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest in the 7-8 age category. The winning posters were selected from five age groups aged 5-14 and the first place posters are featured on the North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH) 2009 poster distributed worldwide as part of the May 3-9, 2009 NAOSH Week and May 6 Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day.
In addition to winning a savings bond, O’Neill along with all the poster contest winners and entrants will be recognized at the NAOSH 09 national kick-off events Monday, May 4 in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Department of Labor and during the ASSE awards ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. ASSE, U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) officials and OSHA Alliance members representing more than 150,000 businesses will participate. In addition, there will be a special Sunday, May 3 brunch at the U.S. National Zoo in D.C. for poster winners, participants, their families and ASSE members, hosted by ASSE’s Region III. Lamar Outdoor Advertising has also donated billboard space to feature the winning ASSE posters and runners up in locations throughout the U.S.
The ASSE kids’ ‘Safety-on-the-Job’ poster contest is for members’ children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as member-sponsored schools and organizations, aged 5-14 and is aimed at educating children at an early age on the importance of and how to be safe at work. Winning posters best illustrate workplace safety.
O’Neill’s poster, titled ‘We Need Safety to Live!’ won second place for best reflecting safety at work. Besides drawing, O’Neill likes reading and crafts. She attends Whiton Elementary School in Branchburg, NJ. ASSE Professional Member and ASSE NJ Chapter President Kristin Herman, ASP, sponsored O’Neill. Herman also sponsored several kids at schools in the Branchburg and Flanders area of New Jersey.Herman currently serves as senior corporate environmental, health and safety specialist for Benjamin Moore Paints in Flanders, NJ.
