The South Brunswick Police Department is working to make sure that victims of domestic violence aren’t alone.
Classes will begin Monday to train civilian volunteers who signed up to join the Domestic Violence Response Team. The program is run in conjunction with Women Aware Inc., an organization that provides shelter, counseling, protection, support and advocacy for victims of domestic violence.
”Our advocates meet with victims at police headquarters and serve as a walking pamphlet of the services we offer,” said Jill Zinckgraf, director of public relations for Women Aware. “We want to reduce the isolation a battered woman experiences and give all the options available to her.”
After completing the required 40-hour course, advocates must be willing to serve on an on-call shift basis to respond in a time of crisis.
”We provide comprehensive learning tools to deal with the situation,” Ms. Zinckgraf said.
Volunteers work with the police to provide support, information, referrals and a safety plan. Advocates also discuss with the victims their legal rights associated with obtaining a temporary restraining order.
