Two suspects arrested in Marlboro shooting

Two residents of Cliffwood Beach have been arrested and charged with two counts of first degree attempted murder in connection with the shooting of a third Cliffwood Beach man and the attempted shooting of a fourth Cliffwood Beach man in Marlboro on Feb. 25.

According to a press release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office that was issued on March 4, Abdel Mobarak, 19, was arrested and charged on March 3. Cameron Jackson, 27, was arrested and charged on March 4.

The prosecutor gave the following account of the incident. At about 5:40 p.m. Feb. 25, officers from the Marlboro Police Department responded to a Lloyd Road address following a 911 hang-up call from that location.

Upon arrival the responding police officers found broken glass and fresh blood in the driveway of the residence. No victims were present at that location when police arrived. A short time later, police located Daryl Jackson, 34, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. He was suffering from gunshot wounds. According to the press release, Jackson had been driven to the hospital by Anthony Gray, 21.

An investigation into the shooting was immediately commenced by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office in conjunction with the Marlboro Police Department. The investigation revealed that after Mobarak and Cameron Jackson drove to the house in a car, Mobarak left the car and walked toward Daryl Jackson and Gray, who were in the driveway.

The prosecutor said Mobarak then fired a handgun at the victims, hitting Daryl Jackson, who was seated in a car, several times. Gray was able to avoid injury. After the shooting, Mobarak got back in the car that was being driven by Cameron Jackson, and the two men drove away.

Mobarak and Cameron Jackson have both been charged with two counts of first degree attempted murder. Both men are also charged with one count each of second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and second degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

If convicted of first degree attempted murder, the maximum potential custodial sentence is a state prison term of up to 20 years. If convicted of either of the second degree crimes, the maximum potential custodial sentence is a state prison term of up to 10 years.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis A. Valentin said, “Mr. Jackson sustained serious life-threatening injuries as a direct consequence of dangerous gun violence engaged in by Mobarak and Cameron Jackson. The Monmouth County law enforcement community is committed to thoroughly investigating and prosecuting all crimes committed with firearms.”

State Superior Court Judge Ronald L. Reisner set bail for Mobarak at $1.25 million, cash only. Reisner set bail for Cameron Jackson at $750,000, cash only. Reisner ordered that both men are to have no contact with either of the victims and to avoid returning to the location where the shootings took place. Both men have been lodged in the Monmouth County jail in lieu of bail.

Notwithstanding these arrests, detectives from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the Marlboro Police Department are continuing their investigation into the shootings. Valentin asked anyone with information regarding the circumstances of the shootings to contact Detective Sgt. Michael Meany of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-800-533-7443 and/or Detective Lt. Fred Reck the Marlboro Police Department at 732-536-0100, ext. 466.

As of March 4, Daryl Jackson remained in Bayshore Community Hospital. His condition had been upgraded and he was no longer in the Intensive Care Unit, according to the press release.
