The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting hundreds of people from Mercer County to work near their homes. The Trenton Census Office has been in operation since October, and the Census Bureau seeks to hire locally for April 2009 operations.
In preparation for the 2010 Census, more than 40 employees will provide office support as clerks, administrative assistants, and supervisors. The remaining positions are in the field, and employees will be working in their own communities throughout a five-county area, including Hunterdon.
The Census Bureau is offering full and part-time positions featuring flexible hours, paid training, mileage reimbursement, as well as the opportunity to work near home. Wages range from $10-20 per hour, and all jobs are temporary.
Trenton Office Manager Richard Kernan said: “Not only will the results of the 2010 Census determine legislative redistricting and the allocation of $300 billion per year to states and localities, the data will also reveal how the nation has changed. The 2010 Census gives us information on how to build a healthier country and a better-informed government.”

The U.S. Constitution requires a population and housing count every 10 years. The effort employs some of the most sophisticated technical and operational tools available, as well as a work force of 1.3 million temporary employees to count every man, woman and child once and in the right place. Census results are the basis for congressional representation as well as the distribution of federal, state and local funds. Census Day is April 1, 2010.
