HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP: Watershed offers lots of outdoor programs

Jeff Hoagland: ”Research shows that spending time outdoors is critical to the growth, development and well-being of our children”

The longtime education director of the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association (SB-MWA) says parents would be well-advised to help their children spend as much time outdoors, and in various nature-based activities, as possible.
And, parents with that thought in mind can take advantage of the association’s spring break and summer camp offerings.
”Research shows that spending time outdoors is critical to the growth, development and well-being of our children,” said Jeff Hoagland.
The SB-MWA is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
”Parents are going back to the basics and choosing activities, programs and summer camps that are close to home and really make a difference for their children. Parents recognize that the positives of outdoor exploration are not only good for their children but also for the future of our environment,” said Mr. Hoagland, who has been at the SB-MWA since 1984.
Attendance in outdoor educational programs at the association’s 860-acre Reserve in Hopewell Township is up from 2008 and shows no signs of slowing down, said association spokeswoman Gwen McNamara.
Ms. McNamama notes that in his book “Last Child in the Woods,” Richard Louv discusses “nature deficit disorder.” Mr. Louv cites research that supports the thesis that spending time outdoors can: enhance children’s creativity, problem-solving ability, self esteem and self control; improve health and reduce stress; enhance children’s emotional and social development; and improve cognitive ability and focus.
The SB-MWA’s scenic Reserve is in eastern Hopewell Township, off Titus Mill Road.
