Boheme Opera New Jersey presents Giacomo Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” April 17 and 19 at Patriots Theater at The Trenton War Memorial.
Come with Boheme Opera to a time when Japan was coming into a new age, when some were willing to embrace the future for power, some for pleasure – and one passionate Geisha, for love.
The women: Cio-Cio San – blinded to the truth by love and the promise of America; Suzuki – her caring servant, mute witness to Butterfly’s tragic self-destruction. The two men in Cio-Cio San’s life who stood for what was right – and wrong – with post-war America: Pinkerton – arrogant and impetuous Sharpless – the compassionate Consul, who loved the land, its people and the woman who would never love him. Prince Yamadori who was spurned by Cio-Cio San as he spurned his own royal heritage for the thrill of the West.
