SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Principal Anzek plays right tune

As a district, South Brunswick has continually held a firm belief in the benefits that music education brings to its classrooms.
As a result of the focus on the music program, one of the district’s administrators was recently honored for supporting the performing arts.
The New Jersey Music Educators Association named Brunswick Acres Principal Joseph Anzek as the recipient of this year’s Outstanding Administrators Award.
”I’m really flattered to win the award, but it has a lot more to do with other people in the music department and our classroom teachers,” Mr. Anzek said. “This is a great environment for music and for people to work in. We believe that music is so important in school and makes it a better place. I’m really just humble and proud.”
The association honored Mr. Anzek at its annual conference in February. Mr. Anzek was cited for supporting a number of music education programs and performing opportunities at the elementary school level. He was singled out for scheduling, at music teacher Jennifer Barr’s request, group music instruction during the academic part of the day instead of during recess.
”If the kids wanted to be in the choral group they had to make a choice between choral group practice and playtime,” he said. “Playtime is pretty precious to fourth- and fifth-graders. We want them playing in the playground as well as singing.”
Mr. Anzek said participation in the music program makes the students more well rounded and helps them develop tools that will help them as they progress through school.
”Music is a point of pride, achievement and accomplishment that’s not easily earned,” Mr. Anzek said. “You really have to work at it and it takes hours of practice and self-discipline. The kids are working hard to accomplish something great and that’s a lesson in and of itself.”
Mr. Anzek said the music program helps students express themselves while also learning to work in a team environment.
South Brunswick’s educators are no stranger to receiving this honor from the music association. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Joanne Kerekes, Director of Student Services James Warfel, and Brooks Crossing Principal Gary Abbamont have previously been named as recipients of the award.
”I think they may have to retire the award in this district one of these years,” Mr. Anzek said.
