AROUND CRANBURY: Watercolorists on display

   Small Works, The Art of Watercolorists Unlimited, is the April exhibit at Gourgaud Gallery. A meet the artist reception will be held on Sunday April 5 from 1 to 3 p.m.
   The show consists of paintings from 17 artists; approximately two to three per person and all paintings are 11 by 17 inches or smaller.
   Watercolorists Unlimited has been meeting for more than 25 years to critique their painting on a new subject each month. The artists show their work throughout New Jersey, including upcoming shows at the Blackwells Mills Canal House, the Triumph Brew Pub, The Hillsborough Library and annually at the Gourgaud Gallery.
   The gallery, which is located in Town Hall, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the 1st, 3rd and last Sunday of the month from 1 to 3 p.m. The gallery will be closed Friday, April 10.

   Thanks to the efforts of Don Jo Swanagan, the town has been treated to countless interesting and educational exhibits at the Cranbury Museum, not to mention a museum and history center lovingly taken care of.
   In honor of his many years of service the Cranbury Historical and Preservation Society is holding a reception for Don Jo on Saturday, April 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Cranbury Museum, 4 Park Place East. All in town are invited to attend.

   Costume historian and designer Barbara Meyer Darlin will give a talk entitled “The Gibson Girl Friday Meets the Victorian Woman,” at an Afternoon Tea Social at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Cranbury, at 3:30 p.m. Aril 25.
   Her program will compare the lives and fashions of a turn-of-the-20th-century society lady and an office worker of the time who typically wore tight shoes, three petticoats and a whalebone corset. As she demonstrates typical clothing of the period, Mrs. Darlin will describe obstacles and employment practices women encountered as they entered the male-dominated world of business.
   Barbara Darlin earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, and has 30 years experience in costuming for theater. A member of the Costume Society of America, she has been featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine and Main Line Today, and has spoken at museums, retirement communities, schools, historical societies and women’s organizations.

   The Woman’s Club of Cranbury will hold an Egg Hunt for children ages 3 to third grade at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11, in Village Park.
   Children are asked to arrive on time and bring a basket. The Easter Bunny will be at the park to greet the children so please bring your camera.

   A Night with Cranbury Jazz will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church Hall.
   Hosted by the Cranbury Public Library, the program will feature the ensemble, Cranbury Jazz, made up of mostly Cranbury residents. The group will be playing jazz standards as well as bebop and blues.

   The Third Annual Stream Clean-Up will take place on Saturday, April 25.
   The Environmental Commission, Cranbury Township and the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association are joining forces once again for the event, which starts at 9 a.m. from Village Park by Brainerd Lake. The clean-up ends at noon and takes place rain or shine. Participants should wear boots and long sleeves and work gloves are recommended.
   Last year, 58 bags of trash, five tires, a fire extinguisher, a new computer keyboard, a charcoal grill, and a 10 foot pipe were among the items collected by the Scouts and local residents and quickly removed by the Township’s Public Works Department. That was what was collected in Cranbury alone!
