MANVILLE: Borough briefs

Mayor, council OK turf request
To support the Manville Board of Education’s grant application for the installation of an all-weather turf field at the high school football field, the Borough Council unanimously approved a resolution endorsing the application.
According to the resolution, in order to apply for a Recreation Grant from the county, the mayor and council must support the application.
Reminder to clean pet waste
In a continued effort to keep Manville clean, Councilman Ted Petrock implored residents to remember a borough ordinance concerning proper disposal of pet waste.
Mr. Petrock said he has heard complaints of residents not cleaning up after their animals, and he asked them to remember that there is an ordinance in place requiring its removal, with possible fines up to $1,250.
”We are asking pet owners to pick up the waste,” he said. “You are responsible for cleaning it up. If you are convicted (of not), there is a steep penalty.”
State backing for flood plan
In an effort to continue the United States Army Corps of Engineers Millstone River Basin Flood Damage Reduction and Ecosystem Restoration Study, the Borough Council unanimously approved a resolution to request that funding equivalent to that which was earmarked by the fiscal year 2010 Federal Budget also be appropriated by the state.
Although the borough is not receiving any funds in 2009 to move forward with the study, Borough Administrator Gary Garwacke said the federal government has earmarked about $100,000 to continue in 2010.
In order for that money to be received and used, Mr. Garwacke said, the same amount must also be given by the state.
”The state has to match that money,” he said. “We are just giving a reminder.”
The resolution will be sent to Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman, Assemblyman Pete Biondi, Assemblywoman Denise Coyle and the commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
