OLD BRIDGE — A Sayreville woman died recently after being struck by a hitand run motorist on Bordentown Avenue.

Karen Costello, 52, of the Parlin section, was hit by a vehicle at 9:24 a.m. March 20, according to police.

No witnesses have come forward with a vehicle description or any other information regarding the suspect, according to Lt. Robert Moser of the Old Bridge Police Department.

“We don’t know what kind of car, [or] what had happened,” Moser said. He said police are investigating the incident.

The incident occurred in the area of a sharp curve in the road on Bordentown Av- enue near Waterworks and Cheesequake roads, Moser said. The speed limit along that part of Bordentown Avenue is 40 mph, but it is not known how fast the driver was going when the pedestrian was hit.

The driver faces a charge of leaving the scene of an accident, and additional charges would depend on a variety of factors as police continue to investigate the incident.

Costello was born in Brooklyn and resided in Sayreville for 43 years, according to an obituary from the Parlin-based Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home. She is survived by her former husband John; children Kelly, Daniel, Megan and David; parents Theodore and Irene Tauby; and sister Jacqueline Kaphammer.

Robert Hallacker of Freehold grew up in the same Snyder Avenue neighborhood off Pulaski Avenue that Costello moved to from Brooklyn when she was 11 years old and he was 12 years old. He said they were childhood friends who attended Washington School, Sayreville Junior High School and Sayreville War Memorial High School.

Costello was an unassuming and goodhearted person, Hallacker said.

“I knew her more when she was younger,” Hallacker said. “She was just a great person … Her mother and father are great people. She came from good parents. I remember her grandmother lived with them when she was younger.”
