Proms, Parties and Pitfalls: SUDZ (Stop Underage Drinking Zone), South Brunswick Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse, South Brunswick Parent Academy and the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) of Middlesex County is hosting a Prom, Parties and Pitfall 2009 forum from 7 to 9 p.m. at South Brunswick High School (750 Ridge Road). This workshop is an educational forum for parents to gain knowledge, insight and tips on teens and alcohol and keeping children safe during this time of the year. Speakers include representatives from SBHS Intervention Services, South Brunswick Police Department and Rutgers University’s Dean of Students. Hear the perspective from both a South Brunswick High School graduate and a current Rutgers student. Using the Library Online Catalog: Attend a free seminar at the South Brunswick Public Library and learn how to use the online catalog more efficiently. The seminar will be in the library’s computer training room at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 17 and again at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 27. Participants will learn how to find resources, renew items, place holds, and access the holds of the library’s 26-member consortium. The seminar will also include a brief introduction to ListenNJ, downloadable electronic books; MyLibraryDV, downloadable movies; and a quick library tour. Trip to a battleship: The Senior Center is sponsoring a trip to the Battleship New Jersey, located on the waterfront in Camden. This is a one and a half to two hour guided tour of the ship and includes lots of walking and some stair/ladder climbing. There is a multimedia room for those that may have limited mobility. The cost is $18 per person which includes admission, tour and transportation. You may register on or after Feb. 11 in person at the senior center. Seniors only art show: South Brunswick’s Senior Citizens are invited to a special “Seniors Only” viewing of the school district’s fifth annual Student Art Gallery from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at South Brunswick High School, 750 Ridge Road. Seniors are asked to register through the Senior Center, 732-329-4000, ext. 7670 no later than Monday, April 13. Bus transportation will be provided by the Senior Center. Those interested in providing their own transportation may do so.
Student art show: Selected art works from kindergarten through 12th grade students from throughout the South Brunswick School District will be on display at the District Student Art Gallery. The gallery will be housed in South Brunswick High School’s Annex Gymnasium (750 Ridge Road) and will be open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. On the night of April 22, the art teachers will select a piece from each K-5 school, two pieces from each middle school and eight pieces from the high school for inclusion in the school district’s 2009-2010 calendar.

Earth Day: Join the township in beautifying your home town by taking part in Earth Day. Since 1992 South Brunswick, with help from the New Jersey Clean Communities Program, has sponsored annual its volunteer litter clean up during the month of April to celebrate Earth Day locally. Year after year, dedicated individuals, families and groups have given of their valuable time in service to their community and have done a superb job in making South Brunswick a cleaner community. So far this year, 40 individuals and groups have committed to give one hour of their time to clean up litter within the Township. But there are still more areas that need cleaning. The township will supply volunteers with bags and gloves to get the job done. A commemorative tree planting and celebration is planned for volunteers from noon until 2 p.m. at Reichler Park (Senior Center in case of rain). Sacred cantata: The Choir from the First Baptist Church of Browns Mills will play in the historic Fresh Ponds Chapel, at the corner of Fresh Ponds and Davidsons Mill roads, at 7:30 p.m. The theme is The risen Savior, ending the season of Eastertide. Free.

Meet the author: Samantha Schutz, author of “I don’t want to be crazy” will be coming to the library to discuss her poetic memoir from 7 to 8 p.m. In her poetic memoir Ms. Schutz recalls when she first left home for college and subsequently discovered that, as pressures increased, she began to suffer severe anxiety attacks. This discovery began a journey of recovery and coping. Copies of the book to purchase are anticipated Ms. Schutz will autograph. Registration is not required. This is especially for teens in grades six through 12, but is open to all. The event will be in Program Room 2, the octagon room. Refreshments will be provided. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the South Brunswick Public Library.

The next Top Model: Ever watch a modeling show and think I could do that? Get your chance at the South Brunswick Public Library in April. Teens in grades eight through 12 can register beginning April 17. Registration is limited to the first 15 teens registered and ends May 1. The models will be asked to pose for an artistic shot, a close-up face shot, appear in a film short of a “commercial” for the Library, and do a runway show wearing something dressy and something sporty/casual.
Audience votes will determine the winner. There will be several categories to shine in and an overall winner. The preliminary round will be “models only” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6. The runway finale will be open to the public from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 9. This year we will collect used bikes, sewing machines, soccer balls and cleats. Actors sought: The South Brunswick Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking South Brunswick actors with special needs, 10 and up to present “The Pied Piper’s Wild West Show” a Taubenslag Production. Rehearsals are scheduled from June 8 to 12 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the SB Senior Center. The performance will be on Friday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m. Transportation is not provided.
