Gail Siggelakis, Susan Giachetti, of Robbinsville
The New Jersey Department of Transportation has a $2.7 billion plan to expand the New Jersey Turnpike from a six-lane to a 12-lane roadway from Exit 6 to 8A. Our neighborhood, Washington Hunt, of Robbinsville, smack in the middle (Exit 7A), is slated to have all the extra truck lanes and a truck exit ramp extend 200 feet into our development, leaving us a 500-foot buffer.
Nonetheless, we don’t qualify for sound barriers.
Our homes and neighborhood were a dream-come-true for us, so we made the necessary adjustments to present truck noise, which is so loud we can’t open our windows during a summer evening. A report by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign finds that turnpike traffic doesn’t merit an expansion that will affect residential homes and the environment so detrimentally. Between destruction of wetlands and an increase in greenhouse gas pollution, we encourage all elected officials to read this report (www.tstc.org/reports/SMI_Turnpike.pdf) and fight to stop the turnpike expansion. Please consider their suggestions to accommodate traffic in ways that respect homeowners’ rights for peace and quiet and protect our precious dwindling wetlands.
