The 55-year-old driver of a Hyundai that went under the trailer of a truck in a crash on Route 31 just south of Orchard Avenue, in southern Hopewell Township, was lucky he was unhurt Tuesday afternoon.
The driver of the Hyundai, Ernest P. Tkac, of Yardley, Pa., was pronounced OK at the accident scene by the Pennington First Aid Squad.
Lt. Lance Maloney, of the Hopewell Township police, said the crash occurred at 2:56 p.m. when Mr. Tkac, who was in the left lane, attempted to change lanes and struck the passenger-side trailer wheels of a 2005 Freightliner trailer, which was in the right lane.
The collision with the wheels caused the Hyundai to go under the Freightliner’s trailer, which was empty.
Mr. Tkac was charged with careless driving by Officer Lincoln Karnoff.
The Freightliner was driven by Charles R. Linaberry, 49, of Gouldsboro, Pa. The truck is owned by Gary W. Gray Trucking, of Delaware.
The accident forced a closing of one lane in each direction. Route 31 is a four-lane road in that area.
