The daughter of a Roosevelt borough councilman was killed early Thursday morning in Gettysburg, Pa., where she attended college.
Emily Rachel Silverstein, 19, a sophomore at Gettysburg College, was allegedly murdered by an ex-boyfriend in his off-campus apartment in what Adams County District Attorney Shawn Wagner called a “domestic violence-related homicide” in a story on the school’s Web site.
Roosevelt Mayor Beth Battel confirmed Friday evening that Ms. Silverstein is the daughter of Councilman Bob Silverstein.
”The whole town is grieving,” she said in a phone message. “There will be a memorial service at the Roosevelt School Monday at 2 p.m.
Kevin Schaeffer, 21, of Oley, Pa., stands accused of strangling Ms. Silverstein and stabbing her multiple times. Mr. Schaeffer, a senior at the college, surrendered to police at the scene and remains in custody, according to the release.
He faces preliminary charges of homicide, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and possessing an instrument of crime, according to the release.
An autopsy will be performed on the body. An arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.
”This is a tragedy for the families involved and for our community,” Gettysburg College President Janet Morgan Riggs said in a release.
The incident occurred between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. at Mr. Schaeffer’s apartment. The unit is in a building owned by the university and leased to students. Police responded to a call at 6:45 a.m., and discovered the scene. Ms. Silverstein was dead when ambulances arrived, according to the release.
Mr. Wagner described the incident as a domestic violence-related homicide, saying the victim and the accused had been in a one-year relationship.
