BORDENTOWN CITY — The fact that eight candidates are running for the three spots on the City Commission in this year’s nonpartisan election has not gone unnoticed, and residents will soon have to chance to hear from the would-be commissioners in person.
On Thursday, April 30, residents are invited to a candidates night at the Carslake Community Center. Sponsored by the Downtown Bordentown Association, the League of Women Voters will moderate the event, which will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and is open to the public, with no pre-registration required.
DBA President Mary Barnes said the association this week sent candidates requests to appear, and has heard back from some of them, but not all.
The candidates already gathered April 7 at the Mount Zion AME Church on East Burlington Street, where they answered audience questions in anticipation of the May 12 election.
Under the city’s nonpartisan commission form of government, the three positions on the commission are all up for re-election every four years. According to city tradition, commission members choose the mayor from among themselves, and the position normally goes to the candidate who received the most votes.
James Brimmer, Heather Cheesman, Steven Chestnut, Al Csapo, Larry Denney, incumbent James Lynch, former Commissioner Zigmont Targonski, and incumbent John Wehrman are all running.
Mayor John Collom is not among the current political aspirants. He said previously he has no desire to serve a third term.
