The VFW Post 2290 of Manville is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner for the Manville High School varsity baseball team from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 25 at the post. Adult dinners are $7; Seniors 55 and older $5, children aged 4-12 $3; and kids under 3 are free. Dan Sferrazza, baseball head coach at MHS and team members will be serving patrons of this dinner. Purchase tickets from Manville High School baseball players and coaches, and at the door. All money raised will be used for equipment and uniforms.
Tables are available at the Manville First Aid and Rescue Squad Indoor/outdoor flea market and craft show scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 2 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2290, 600 Washington Ave. The event, which benefits the squad, will be held rain or shine, and includes a bake sale; breakfast and lunch can also be ordered. The Camplain Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2 is offering tickets for their 15th annual fundraising bus trips to two NASCAR Sprint Cup races. The trips will include a one-day trip to Dover Downs on May 31st and Pocono Raceway on Aug. 2. The trips include round-trip bus transportation from Manville, race ticket(s), food and beverages. All proceeds from the trips will benefit the Camplain Volunteer Fire Company building and equipment fund. The Manville Policemen’s Benevolent Association no. 236 annual fund drive is underway. The drive helps support the PBA’s local activities, such as the DARE program, Senior Citizen Luncheon and scholarships, as well as the sick, death, welfare and general funds. The Somerset County Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) is sponsoring an essay contest for New Jersey community college students. Students are asked to write a 600-800 word essay on the 2007 film “Rendition” and the civil liberties issues it raises. First place will receive a $100 prize, and second place will receive $50, courtesy of the ACLU-NJ. Winners will also have their names published in The Civil Liberties Reporter and on www.aclu-nj.org. The deadline for submission is May 6. Early submissions are strongly encouraged. In addition, winning authors will be invited to share their work with the public on May 16th, 2009, when the Somerset County Chapter will hold a screening of “Rendition” at 1 p.m. at the Bound Brook Library, 402 E. Registration for the Somerset Valley YMCA’s Backyard Pool Program is underway. Three sessions are available and are reserved on a first come – first served basis. The Somerville-Raritan-Manville Health Department is conducting a community cholesterol and blood pressure screening from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. April 17 at the Raritan Public Library, 54 E. Somerset St. The test is $5 for residents of the three boroughs; $10 for non-residents. Appointments are not required for this screening. The Somerset Valley YMCA will host YMCA Healthy Kids Day from 10 a.m. –1 p.m. April 18 at the Hillsborough YMCA on South Branch Road, Hillsborough. Activities for children and families are free and open to all. A summer camp open house is also scheduled during the event.

Somerset County Coalition On Affordable Housing will present “Step by Step,” a pre-purchase group program developed for individuals and families planning to buy their first home, at 5:30 p.m. April 21 at the Somerset County Coalition on Affordable Housing, 600 First Ave., Raritan. The seminar, sponsored by TD Banknorth, is a four-hour counseling course that covers the main components of the “home buying process,” and includes a light dinner. Manville High School will be collecting donations April 25 in a fundraiser for scholarships for Manville High School seniors. Items being collected include clean, usable used clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, linens (sheets, towels, spreads, drapes, etc.), stuffed animals, and baby “gear” (such as high chairs, play yards, strollers, walkers, bouncers, car seats).
