MONROE: Fatal crash on Federal Road probed

By Maria Prato-Gaines, Staff Writer
MONROE — Police are investigating a car crash on Federal Road that claimed the life of a Monroe resident on April 10.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and pronounced the driver, 60-year-old Melvyn Greenberg, dead at 9:38 p.m., according to a Middlesex County prosecutor’s office press release.
A preliminary investigation has determined that Mr. Greenberg, who was driving a 2008 Infinity G37, was traveling westbound on Federal Road when he failed to negotiate a curve to the right and drove across the road, it states.
The car continued across a field to the front lawn of a private residence at 311 Federal Road and crashed into a tree at approximately 9:15 p.m., the release said. The car then caught fire, according to the release.
Shortly before the crash, a Monroe Township police officer on patrol observed Mr. Greenberg’s vehicle travelling at what he believed was an excessive rate of speed, the release stated.
The officer proceeded to follow the vehicle but was unable to catch up to the Infinity before it crashed, according to prosecutor’s office.
That officer’s name is being withheld pending completion of the investigation.
Investigators are waiting for the results from an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, it stated.
Anyone with information on the accident is asked to contact Investigator Jeffrey Temple, of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Fatal Crash Investigation Unit, at 732-745-3300.
