SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Poetry, art exhibit on tap

by Davy James, Staff Writer
The South Brunswick Arts Commission is continuing to showcase various art forms with its monthly poetry readings and an art exhibit that will be on display through June 30.
On Sunday, the poetry series will welcome Sander Zulauf, co-editor of “The Poets of New Jersey: From Colonial to Contemporary,” and Ken Hart, a 2007 co-winner of the Allen Ginsburg Award.
”The two poets will each read a selection and at the end the audience will have a chance to ask questions of the poets and see their motivation and how they did their work,” said Fran Nimeck, of the Arts Commission. “When the poet and an audience member are on the same wavelength, the audience gets a visceral reaction that’s moving. Anytime a work of art hits you that way, it’s special and you remember those feelings.”
The reading starts at 2 p.m. in the South Brunswick Public Library in Monmouth Junction. Admission to the poetry readings is free, though a donation of a nonperishable food item to be given to the South Brunswick Food Pantry is encouraged.
Paintings from nine area artists exploring the theme of personal space are on display at The Gallery in the South Brunswick Municipal Building.
”We had such different responses to the theme,” Ms. Nimeck said. “Some of the work submitted never occurred to us and that’s what we like to see. This gives people the chance to see the work of their neighbors, it doesn’t cost a cent to see it and it’s a nice, pleasant environment.”
The Gallery is open weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and evenings when meetings are scheduled. For more information, call 732-329-4000, ext.7635.
