SOUTH BRUNSWICK: YMCA to host day of health

by Davy James, Staff Writer
With childhood obesity becoming more of a problem nationwide, the South Brunswick Family YMCA is joining with other YMCAs across the country to celebrate Healthy Kids Day 2009.
The free event will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the YMCA and is open to the community.
”We want to encourage children and families by showing them that health and physical wellness is important,” said YMCA Communications Director Janet Weyers. “We want to make kids aware of their physical health, to be active and to eat well.”
The event features vendors with information about keeping kids healthy and samples of healthy food and snack choices. The indoor and outdoor game offerings include relay races, a Nintendo Wii fitness challenge, face painting, outdoor soccer and capture the flag games, as well as make your own healthy trail mix.
There will also be information on children’s dental health, vitamin and supplement information, child ID and laser fingerprinting, the St. Peter’s University Hospital Mobile Health Services van, and a sign up for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event.
”This event is something that fits in with the overall mission of the Y, which is to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities,” Ms. Weyers said. “This represents the aim of what we’re all about. It’s a fun day to spend with the family and doing something that is both good for you and fun at the same time.”
The South Brunswick Family YMCA is located at 329 Culver Road in Monmouth Junction. For more information call 732-329-1150.
