Event will begin at 9 a.m. April 25 and continue throughout the day
Saturday is Canal Clean-Up Day at the Delaware Canal State Park.
The Friends of the Delaware Canal sponsor this annual event to encourage volunteers to clear trash, debris, and brush from the historic waterway and towpath that runs from Easton to Bristol, Pa.
Traditionally, the goal of the Clean-Up has been to cover as much of the canal’s 60-mile length as possible. This year, with more than 30 miles of the canal undergoing flood repair, the effort will be abbreviated, but more than 100 volunteers are still needed to cover the accessible areas.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. April 25 and continue throughout the day. Those who want to participate should choose a convenient or needy location, and then contact the area coordinator for that section. The coordinator will let volunteers know where to meet and what to bring.
Areas (with names of coordinator and phone numbers) include:
— Point Pleasant (Bridge 1 to Mountainside Inn), Randy Apgar, 215-297-8317;
— Solebury Township (North — Virginia Forrest Recreation Area to Centre Bridge), George Schweickhardt, 215-862-9884;
— Solebury Township (South — Centre Bridge to Phillips Mill), Sheree Cote, 215-297-0528;
— New Hope (North — Phillips Mill to Route 202), David and Vicky Child, 215-794-1199;
— New Hope Village (Route 202 to Odette’s), Chuck Tarr, 215-862-0883;
— New Hope (Lock 11 Painting), John Sikora, 215-321-0803;
— Washington Crossing (Route 532, north and south), Cindy Friel, 215-489-8783.
Gloves, long-handled nets, boots, and branch snippers are useful tools to bring along to Canal Clean-Up Day. Trash bags will be provided. Canoe or kayak owners, who are volunteering in sections of the canal that have water, are urged to bring boats to retrieve the elusive trash that lies just out of reach in the water and on the berm bank.
For additional information about Clean-Up Day, contact the Friends at 215-862-2021 or [email protected].
The Friends of the Delaware Canal is an independent, not-for-profit organization working to restore, preserve, and improve the Canal and its surroundings. Its primary goals are to ensure that the canal is fully watered from Easton to Bristol and that the towpath trail is useable over its entire length.
