Sonja Walter, councilwoman, of Robbinsville
Contrary to a statement made in a recent letter to the editor by Ed Nelson, I voted “yes” on Robbinsville’s pedophile residency restriction ordinance. Anyone can check the record by referring to the official minutes. It is unfortunate that Mr. Nelson was not willing to review the facts before putting pen to paper.
Even though I had serious concerns about the efficacy of such an ordinance based upon the research I conducted, when the residents came forward requesting that the ordinance be adopted, I listened to them and represented their wishes by voting “yes.”
Instead of merely enacting feel-good legislation, I decided to do something that would really help to protect our town’s children. I not only brought the radKIDS program into Robbinsville, I applied for and received grant money for the town, and I teach it.
radKIDS is a personal safety and empowerment class. Any parent who has had a child graduate from this program knows the importance of the lessons it teaches. I encourage all parents of young children to be proactive and sign your child up for radKIDS the next time a class is offered through the township or through SAFE. Teach them that no one has a right to hurt them. Give them the tools that enable them to protect themselves.
Editor’s note: Ms. Walter is a candidate for mayor.
