CRANBURY: Plainsboro road gets some work done

By Maria Prato-Gaines, Staff Writer
CRANBURY — Drivers should expect a much bumpier and narrower ride along Plainsboro Road — at least for the next few days.
That’s because the New Jersey American Water Company is in the middle of a roadwork restoration project that began Tuesday and will run until Monday, said Christine Smeltzer, township administrator.
The roadwork is part of a bigger project that involved the company installing 30-foot pipeline last fall, she said.
”The water company wanted a larger pipe in case they needed more water in the future,” she said. “There’s been a lot of development with Plainsboro.”
The company will sweep the road before tack oil is applied, and once milling and paving is complete, a landscaping subcontractor will restore the grass shoulder area where the transmission line was installed, according to a press release from the township.
The road rehab is confined to the north end of the road as the pipeline was installed only on that side, Ms. Smeltzer said.
Police will be directing traffic and plan to keep one lane open for drivers during the course of the project.
New Jersey American Water Company is funding the entire project, including the officer’s pay, and had a logical reason for scheduling the work months after the initial installation was complete, Ms. Smeltzer said.
”The weather’s been cold, and they could only do so much to restore it,” she said.
An official press release on the work can be found on the township’s official Web site at www.cranburytownship.org/news_advisories.html.
