CRANBURY — The Township Committee is reviving its traffic subcommittee, after discussing recently passed legislation that gives municipalities broader authority over regulating local roads.
Under bill S1908, which was signed into law in December, counties and municipalities are able to designate parking restrictions, install stoplights and crosswalks, create no-passing zones, erect yield and stop signs, and change speed limits after an engineer reviews the plan and without Department of Transportation approval.
Prior to the law, two sets of engineers, one from the DOT and one representing a municipality or county, would review the same plans and apply the same standards.
Cranbury’s own subcommittee will consist of Township Committeemen Win Cody and David Stout, Township Engineer Cathy Marcelli, Township Traffic Engineer Andrew Feranda and a representative from the Police Department.
Township Administrator Christine Smeltzer said the new legislation will be a benefit to the township because it should reduce the time it takes for municipalities to make minor traffic changes.
”If we needed a stop sign or change in speed limit, it would take a while to get that,” she said. “The advantage here really is the time.”
