”The Vagina Monologues,” performed by students and faculty from Raritan Valley Community College in a benefit for the Resource Center for Women and Their Families, played to a full house at the college’s Welpe Theater on Tuesday evening.
The first performance of the play by the RVCC college performers was sold out to a standing room only crowd well in advance of the event. The audience was treated to a first rate performance. From the moment the actors, 16 women students and faculty members lead by student director Jessica Zorn, took the stage, the audience embarked on a journey about being a woman, good and bad relationships and the tragedy of abuse that has a global effect on society.
The 18 different monologues ranged from hilariously provocative to tragically poignant.
As stated in her program notes, “Each of them (the women actors) brought her own unique perspective, her heart, their soul and her bravery to this production,” Director Jessica Zorn said.
The standing ovation at the end of the performance was heartfelt, moving and deserved.
The production is sponsored by Raritan Valley Community College’s Social Justice Club and proceeds from the fund raising efforts benefit the Resource Center for Women and Their Families, a private, nonprofit agency which has served survivors of domestic abuse in Somerset County for 30 years and offers services at no charge.
An encore performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the Somerset Valley Playhouse, 689 Amwell Road, Hillsborough. Tickets to the performance are available by calling the Resource Center at 908-359-0003, ext. 220. Tickets are priced at $15 for general admission and $10 for students (with ID) and senior citizens. All proceeds will benefit the client programs at the Resource Center.
