South Brunswick High School will be presenting the play, “Oklahoma!” from May 7 to 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the high school.
”We’ve never repeated a show in the last 20 years, and this was one of the plays we’ve never done, but that I’ve always wanted to,” said music teacher Ginny Kraft. “It’s fun to do with a big cast and gives a lot of kids the opportunity to be in the play.”
The numerous scenes involving choreography presented a challenge for Ms. Kraft and the students as they practice feverishly in preparation for opening night.
”The whole cast dances at one point or another,” Ms. Kraft said. “There are all different types of dances with square dancing and even a ballet that takes place in the middle of the show. You’ve got a lot of different talent levels so we try to fit kids in where they can be successful so it’s come together pretty nicely. It’s a good group of kids.”
The opportunity to perform an iconic play such as “Oklahoma!” was especially exciting for Ms. Kraft.
”I grew up in Doylestown where (Oscar) Hammerstein lived, and I never performed in ‘Oklahoma!’ So it’s interesting for me to do as a director,” she said. “It’s a classic musical for a reason. There’s something timeless about it, and it’s great watching the kids enjoy it. It’s just a great musical.”
Ms. Kraft praised the work of the students and parents involved with the crew who she said have done a wonderful job building and painting sets in preparation of opening night as well as obtaining the necessary props and costumes.
Tickets cost $8 for adults and $6 for students and will be available at the door.
