BRIDGEWATER – The Red-Headed League of Jersey, a society of Sherlock Holmes aficionados, will hold its next meeting Friday, May 22, at Soriano’s at Parkside, located at 141 Old York Road. Potential new members and guests are welcome.
The evening begins with a cash bar at 6:30 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner. The menu includes London broil, chicken piccata, pasta Calabrese, scalloped potatoes, vegetable, coffee, tea and dessert.
Cost is $30 per person and includes dinner, tax and gratuity. Payment is due in advance by May 15. Checks should be made payable to Linda Morris and mailed to her at 723 Drake Avenue, Middlesex, NJ 08846. For more information or directions, contact Steve or Linda Morris at (732) 356-9560 or at [email protected]
Sandra W. Moss, M.D., of Metuchen, will present a paper titled, “Conan Doyle and the White Plague,” about how tuberculosis figures into one of the key stories in the Sherlockian canon.
Risetta Jacobs of North Plainfield has crafted the evening’s quiz on “The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb.” The prize – a framed British shilling on parchment – is awarded to the person with the highest score. The winner keeps the framed prize until the next meeting, for proud display in his or her home, and also makes up the quiz for the next gathering. Additional quiz prizes include a canister of Sherlock Holmes London Tea, donated by member Bob Moss, BSI, and a Sherlock Holmes tie pin.
The Red-Headed League of Jersey, which meets twice a year, is one of many scion societies of the Baker Street Irregulars (BSI), the leading American Sherlockian society. Members share a common interest in the consulting detective created in the 1880s by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Like many of the societies affiliated with the BSI, the organization takes its name from one of the 56 short stories and four novels penned by Dr. Conan Doyle.
