Freehold’s Alyssa Mayrose, a sophomore at Fairleigh Dickinson University, was named the women’s basketball team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2008-09 season. The award was voted on by the players. Mayrose, a graduate of Freehold High School, Freehold Borough, averaged 12.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Knights and was second on the team in assists (79). The Knights, 10-20 overall, were 9-9 in Northeast Conference play and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament. At Freehold High School, Mayrose helped lead the Colonials’ soccer team to its first state group championship and the basketball team to a Shore Conference division title.
Manalapan’s Kristin Andrews set the St. Joseph’s University 400-meter intermediate hurdles school record at the Swathmore, Pa., Last Chance Meet. Andrews, a sophomore, clocked 1:02.65 in placing third. Earlier in the season, Andrews was third in the 400 hurdles (1:03.13) at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships. She ran on the Hawks’ 4×400- meter relay squad that was fifth at the Atlantic 10 event and ran an ECAC qualifying time of 3:52.58. Andrews is a graduate of Manalapan High School, where she set school records in the 400 hurdles and ran the 800 meters. St. Joseph’s University is in Philadelphia.
