The 14th annual SBOANJ golf outing will take place on July 13 at Gambler Ridge Golf Club in Cream Ridge. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Horsemen’s Benevolent Fund. Sponsors are being sought at levels ranging from $100 to $2,000. The cost of the outing is $135 per golfer. The cost of dinner only is $50.

Matrix Baseball, a local team consisting primarily of players from Marlboro, won the annual Jersey Shore Memorial Day Beach Blast Baseball Tournament. Competing in the 15U/16U Division, the Matrix went undefeated in the three-day tournament, going 7-0 overall. The Matrix defeated the Jackson Bobcats in the championship final played at Red Bank Regional High School, 17-5. The Matrix were the No. 2 seed and the Bobcats were the No. 1 seed. Playing for the Matrix were Ralph Marinello, Alejandro Diaz, Michael Wolfson, Scott Donaghue, J.J. Reilly, Kevin Vitale, Michael Imperato, Jon Bobrow, Jake Eckhaus, C.J. Iacobellis and Aaron Rosen. Ralph Marinello, Efrain Diaz and Larry Rosen coach the Matrix. The team uses wood bats.
Christie Rampone, captain of the U.S. Women’s Soccer national team, is conducting a soccer camp in July for girls in grades two through eight. The Christie Rampone and K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital Girls Soccer Camp will be held from July 6-10 from 5-8 p.m. at Sunshine Village Park Fields in Neptune. Rampone has been a member of the national team since 1997 and now is helping pioneer a new women’s professional soccer league. The camp will combine different philosophies and teach many of Rampone’s favorite topics, such as coachability, creativity, translation, confidence and leadership. The cost is $185 per player. Colts Neck’s Meryl Wimberly earned her second All-American certificate with The College of New Jersey women’s track and field team. Wimberly split 48.9 for her 400-meter leg on the Lions’ distance medley relay team that placed fourth at the NCAA Division III Championships. Stephanie Herrick (Wayne Valley), Jianna Spadaccini (Butler) and Claire Johnson (Cherry Hill East) were the other members of the squad that clocked 11:49.71 in Terre Haute, Ind. Wimberly, a sophomore at TCNJ, ran the 400 and 800 meters for the Colts Neck High School track team.
Colts Neck’s Daniel Driscoll, a senior at the Peddie School, Hightstown, was awarded the John Jones Award. The John Jones Award is given by the Peddie School wrestling team of 1970-71 to the current team’s most improved wrestler.
Howell’s Matt Watson, a junior at Wagner College, Staten Island, N.Y., has been named the Akadema Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year and was an All-NEC First Team selection. Watson, a graduate of Howell High School, had one of the finest seasons in Seahawk history. The righthander was 9-1 overall and 7-0 in NEC play. He had a 3.10 ERA (best in the NEC). He struck out 30 batters in 58 innings of work. Watson is pitching for the Petersburg, Va., Generals in the Coastal Plains League this summer.
Watson’s teammate at Wagner College, outfielder Damian Csakai, also a junior, was an All-NEC First Team pick as well. Csakai, a Freehold Township High School graduate, hit .344 and had an on-base percentage of .427. He stole 37 bases (tops in the NEC) and scored 50 runs. Wagner won a school record 17 NEC games in 2009.
Freehold’s Jack Baggitt Jr. was 13 years old when he started working at Freehold Raceway. At that time he was a groom for drivers Harold Kelly and Paul Wojtowicz. Now, 34 years later, 29 of those years as a driver, Baggitt is the toast of the harness track. The 47-year-old Freehold native claimed his first driver’s title at Freehold Raceway, winning 181 races during the recently concluded meet. Baggitt has won more than 2,100 races in his career.
“I am so proud to win the title on my home turf, and this is one of my crowning achievements,” said Baggitt, who succeeds another area driver, Cat Manzi, who has won 20 titles at the track.
Freehold Raceway, Park Avenue, Freehold, will reopen for live harness racing on Aug. 12. Until then, the track remains open for afternoon and evening simulcasting.
Ryan Cuneo of the University of Delaware is playing in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer Baseball League. Cuneo, a graduate of Freehold High School, Freehold Borough, shined at the invitation-only tryouts held for the Cape Cod League and signed to play with the Hyannis Mets. Cuneo is coming off a big junior season with the Blue Hens: he led the team in home runs (17) and RBI (56). The left-handed power hitter batted .285 and had 12 doubles and one triple. His slugging percentage was .599. He slammed three home runs in a game against Hofstra to set a school record. Delaware went 28-20 in 2009.
Manalapan’s Ralph Garfield, competing for the Shore Athletic Club, won the Elliott Denman 1-Mile Walk at the New Jersey International Track Meet held June 6 at Bob Roggy Memorial Field at Holmdel High School. Marlboro High School freshman Rachel Weinberger won the Lindsey Gallo High School Mile I in 5:27.7.
The FCF Camps, sponsored by the Colts Neck Recreation Department, is offering its 11th annual Summer Youth Football Camp. The camp, which will be held at Colts Neck High School, is open to youth league participants ages 7-14 and will run from July 6-9. During the first two days, the camp will introduce all positions as well as basic practice routines and drills. The second day will feature more in-depth positional training. Freehold Area Running Club’s Summer 5K Race Series will begin on June 24 and run each Wednesday through July 29. This is the 27th year that the club has been conducting the series at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Route 33, Manalapan. The 5K, which is run within the park, will start at 6:45 p.m. That race is preceded by the children’s races and 1-mile fun fun that get under way at 6 p.m. Registration will begin at 5:45 p.m. for the 5K, and at 5 p.m. for the other races. Former Freehold High School gridiron standout Darrell Reid is returning home to conduct a football camp. Reid, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Indianapolis Colts and now plays for the Denver Broncos, will host a free non-contact football camp for boys and girls ages 6-13 on June 27 at Freehold High School. The camp is being held in collaboration with Reid’s Footz Foundation, the NFL and the YMCA of Western Monmouth County. The camp will be held in two sessions. The first session with begin at 9:30 a.m. and is for players ages 6-9. The second session will start at noon and is for players ages 10-13.
