Raymond A. Kershaw

Mr. Kershaw, 67, died June 9, 2009, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was born in Camden County and had lived in Ohio before moving to Freehold Township in 1975. Mr. Kershaw had served on the Township Committee in Freehold Township since 1991. Appointed mayor in January 2009, he had also previously held the position of mayor in 1994, 1997 and 2003, as well as deputy mayor in 1992, 2000 and 2006. He currently chaired the township’s social services and public works subcommittees and was active in local charities, serving as chairman of the board of trustees for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Mid-Jersey Chapter. In 1998 and 2007, he was honored by the Multiple Sclerosis Society as Humanitarian of the Year. A graduate of Drexel University, Philadelphia, and a postgraduate of Georgian Court University, Lakewood, Mr. Kershaw was a mechanical engineer in private industry for 32 years, retiring in 1992. He was also a teacher at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology, Sandy Hook, Monmouth County Academy at High Technology High School, and Biotechnology High School, Freehold Township. A member of the Sunrise Optimist Club, Mr. Kershaw was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and served as an assisting minister. Surviving are his wife, Carol; a daughter, Susan M. Kershaw of Freehold Township; two brothers, Albert Kershaw and his wife, Maria, of Mullica Hill, and Paul Kershaw of Thorofare; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at Hope Lutheran Church, Freehold Township, followed by entombment in St. Gabriel Cemetery Mausoleum, Marlboro.
