Despite supplying a powerful offense that scored 84 runs in its eight games, the Bordentown 12-year-olds had to settle for third place in the District 12 Little League Tournament.
“Overall, I thought it was a good tournament,” Bordentown Manager Craig Multer said. “The kids fought hard every game. Unfortunately, we just came out on the short end of the stick.”
Bordentown finished the tournament with a record of 6-2. Bordentown was 3-0 in pool play and 3-2 in the double-elimination Final 8, being hosted by West Windsor.
Bordentown’s season was ended by the hosts from West Windsor, 16-13, this past Sunday.
“We had (West Windsor) on the ropes,” Manager Multer noted. “We were leading by six runs. You have to give them a lot of credit for fighting back like that.”
After Matt Multer hit a grand slam and Zack Gakeler followed with a solo homer in the third, Bordentown was leading West Windsor, 11-5. West Windsor then came back to score five in the fourth and six more runs in the fifth.
Gakeler hit a two-run homer in the fifth to account for Bordentown’s other two runs.
Bordentown had been dropped into the loser’s bracket by a 16-15 loss to Nottingham in seven inning. The game started on July 7 and wasn’t completed until the next day.
Joey Cashman had four hits, including two homers against Nottingham. Gakeler (four hits), Multer and Andrew Howley also homered in the game for Bordentown.
Bordentown defeated Allentown, 9-3, on Thursday. Gakeler was the starting and winning pitcher. Kyle Kafer came on to get the last two outs.
Gakeler had two homers in the win. Multer had two hits. Ryan Shinn had three hits. Evan Pie also hit a homer.
Shinn pitched all four innings as Bordentown defeated Robbinsville, 16-1, in a game stopped early by the blowout rule on Friday night.
Multer and Gakeler both had two homers each in the win. Sean Smith had two hits, including a homer. Cashman had three hits including a homer. Pie added two hits.
“The win over Robbinsville was a big one,” Multer said. “I thought we had a real good shot at winning this whole thing. It just didn’t happen.”
