I recently had the opportunity to catch up with Maplewood Avenue resident Joan Smith, who was not only a proud parent, but a proud neighbor, too!
Joan wanted readers to know about two young women who live on Maplewood, both 2009 PHS graduates. In the past year Dana Sahli achieved the highest award a girl can earn in scouting, the Gold Award. To earn the award Dana needed to complete specific activities in career exploration, community service and self-awareness. Her awarded winning project took place on Cranbury Day last year, when Dana held canoe races on Brainerd Lake. She enlisted the support of the community and fellow scouts, honing her leadership skills in the process. Dana will be attending Gettysburg College in the fall.
Down the street from Dana, Jessica Charwin was busy completing EMT certification. The Cranbury First Aid Squad accepts teen members in two categories, full membership for those 18 and older and a cadet program for 14 to 17 year olds. The certification process includes 130 hours of training plus CPR certification and familiarity with equipment and vehicles. Joan Smith said that the training Jessica completed included a winter rescue simulation. Jessica will be attending Tulane University in the fall.

Joan and Dale Smith recently visited son Gavin to celebrate a milestone. Gavin earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of New Hampshire.
Their son Quentin is out in Washington State where he is a senior graphic arts designer. Quentin has returned to graphic arts after having been lead vocalist for the punk group Vaux for nine years.
Thanks, Joan, for all the good news!
